Today, I’m going to be talking about
- Whether or not you can build a drop shipping business part time, and
- The pros and cons of trying to do that.
So let’s get started.
Can you build a drop shipping store part time? A lot of times this is the main reason that a lot of people get started with drop shipping as sort of their leapfrog into the e-commerce world. In theory you can quite easily start a drop shipping business in your spare time, but people over complicate it.
I will base this post on personal observation. Most people in South Africa that consider dropshipping are employed and they have full time jobs. The dropshipping model is very attractive to them because it will not require a lot of capital, no stock and they get to work from home etc. However what I find is that these individuals don’t treat it like a real business.
Most people are not putting in the time necessary to make it work for them. So let’s look at it this way.
Scenario: You’ve got a full time job, and take on a part time job because you need the extra money and that’s obviously why you would want to start an online business. You have a full time job and you are working all day, right? And then if you happen to get a part time job, or second job, what happens you finish your full time job? You put in the extra 4 hours that is required at the job, right?
So, even if it’s only four hours of extra work at the part time job a day, you still need to turn up for 4 hours to get paid correct? Now If you start an Drop shipping business in South Africa and really want to make it work, you have to treat it like a part time job. I usually see people devote so much time to part time jobs, whereas they can devote that time to their business! Entrepreneurship is always (eventually) more profitable than most jobs, let alone part time jobs. When working on your business, those extra hours that you spend daily quickly add up – a month later you are launching a business. Consistent little efforts everyday can build any business.
So YES it is possible to have a full time job and work on a business at the same time. 90% of our students have full time jobs. You just literally have to attend to your business every single day like you want to make it succeed. Your business can potentially be your key to self employment, financial freedom and more time with family.
